Process Book of Woodblock Printing
Uchida Art Co., LTD., Kyoto

Two Children Playing

Uchida Art Co., LTD.:
Process Book of Woodblock Printing, Kyoto, Uchida Art Co., LTD., undated but ca 1970, small 12mo (5 1/8 x 6 7/8 in - 13.2 x 17.5 cm), light gold stiff covers with paste on title label, accordion style, plates are tipped to page at the top, the first page of text is attached as the front cover paste down. It is followed by eight fold out (attached) pages and then the final page is attached as the paste down of the back cover. This same process is then repeated going the other direction. In other words, you have 11 continuous pages on the front and back for a total there are 22 pages. The first two pages are text. The balance of the pages show the woodblock printing process with one page showing the successive plates "A1-A11" and the adjacent page (B1-11) showing the cumulative state of the woodblock print after application of the "A" woodblock. This book shows a woodblock print of two children playing. The book demonstrates the printing of a color woodblock plate in ten steps (key block plus 9 additional plates).

This book shows a woodblock print of two children playing.

I have seen two different color covers for this book. One is a reddish brown and the other light yellow. Both have paste on title labels.

Earlier, Uchida used this same basic technique ("A" and "B" plates), but loose format, to demonstrate the woodblock printing process.

Completed Woodblock Print

Two Pages of Test and Twenty two prints (10 front to back and 12 back to front). .
