Matched Set.

This is a matched set. The boards are all covered with the same fabric and the cover illustrations are very similar and have the same theme which is a lakeside cottage with a boat in the foreground. The books are all the same size. To see the covers of all three books, click here. To see the title pages of all three books, click here.

Condition.

General Comments Regarding Volumes I, II and III. All three books are in Very Good condition. The covers have wear which is primarily confined to the edges which have scraped areas. As usual, the inside front and back hinges are cracked. Throughout there are small smudges in the margins of the plates. All plates are protected by tissue guards. The condition of the spine covering is discussed below. The bindings are solid but not tight as the plates are held in place completely by the string ties and these have loosened. These books were issued with approximately 1 in of the spine covered with a silk type cloth at the top and bottom.

Specific Comments:

Volume I, Type 2. One plate (Cherry Blossoms and Jinrikisha) has a tear in starting in the right margin and extending 1 cm into the collotype image. The spine covering (top and bottom) is present but both are broken.

Volume II, Type 2. The "Tea Picking plate is inserted upside down. The top and bottom spine covering are both missing.

Volume III, Type 2. The "Cherry Blossoms at Uyeno, Tokyo" plate has a discolored area at the bottom middle and it extends into the image area. The bottom spine covering is present and the top spine covering is missing.

Tamamura, Kozaburo :
Japanese Views and Characters, Vol. II (Yokohama, Kamakura, Fuji and Nagoya), M. Fujii & Company, ca 1910, horizontal 8vo (6 x 9 in - 15.2 x 23 cm), 24 hand colored collotype plates with captions in English, tissue guards, hard boards covered with fabric, string tied, unpaginated. The actual images are approximately 4 x 6 in (10.5 x 15 cm). The hand coloring of the collotype plates in these books is well executed with a wide range of colors employed, to include pastels.

I have examined three types of this book. They had different hand coloring on the front cover and on the title page. While they all have 24 plates and most of the plates were the same, the captions under the plates sometimes varied slightly. In types 1 and type 2 the images of the "Bund of Yokohama" are different. The sequence of the plates in type 1 and type 2 books is significantly different. In the type 3 book there are a couple of different images not found in the type 1 or 2 books. This is a type 2 book.
