Condition.
The book is a Binding Copy. One collotype plate (the 20th plate) is missing. Both front and back outer boards are separated from at the crease where they fold over when opened. The front cover has tape residue in the area of the crease. The front inner brown paper cover with the title Views in the Land of the Rising Sun is detached and has a 1 x 1/8 inch chip broken off. There is no similar brown paper cover at the back. The binding is solid. The plates are clean and free of fault (no toning, foxing, staining, writing, etc). All tissue guards are present, including one for the missing plate. It appears the missing plate was cut out as a stub remains. The hand coloring of many of the plates is unusually vivid.
The wrap-around case is in Poor condition. The case is in fragile condition. Most of the fold/hinges are broken In several places the covering is missing or broken.
Tamamura Kazaburo:
Artistic Japan, Views in the Land of the Rising Sun, Kobe, Japan, Tamamura, not dated (c1906), oblong 5 5/8 x 15 1/2 in (14.1 x 40 cm), cloth covered outer boards with single string tie, brown paper inner covers, housed in wrap-around case, 21 pp. This book is composed of 21 (1 plate missing) hand colored collotype photographs by "Tamamura the Photographer" Each photograph has an English caption. The collotype image areas measure 3 1/4 x 11 1/4 inches. The collotypes are protected with tissue guards. There is no colophon. The cover page indicates "Collotyped and Painted by Tamamura, The Photographer, Kobe, Japan" and carries the second title Views in the Land of the Rising Sun. The title Artistic Japan is printed on the front board.
