Individual Color Flower Collotypes (3)
by Kazumasa Ogawa Marketed by
the Millet Company

Ogawa, Kazumasa (color collotype plates):
This page presents three Kazumasa Ogawa color collotype plates of flowers. The plates are Chrysanthemums, Azalea and Chrysanthemums (in vase). These collotypes are also found in the Brinkley sets published between 1897-8, Japan, Described and Illustrated by the Japanese, Written By Eminent Japanese Authorities and Scholars. However, these plates were not removed from bound volumes. They were marketed individually by the publisher of the Brinkley sets, J. B. Millet Co., Boston. Each collotype is permanently mounted, with a mat, to a board. The board size is 14 x 17 in. The image areas (open areas of the mat) vary from 7 1/2 ~ 8 1/2 in x 10 1/2 in and oval with 9 in diameter. On the back of each board is a plate with the manuscript name of the flower and printed text reading:

Artist: Ogawa
Imported from Japan by the
J.B. Millet Co., Boston.

These color collotypes are K. Ogawa's hallmark work. They have sharp detail and vivid colors. They were produced by Ogawa using a multi-pass collotype process. That very labor intensive process is discussed here.
