Scenes in the Eastern Capital of Japan
Kazumasa Ogawa, 1st Edition, 1911

Ogawa, K. (Kazumasa)
Scenes in the Eastern Capital of Japan, Tokyo (Hiyoshicho), 1911, 1st Edition, 4to (9 x 12 in - 23 x 30.5 cm), illustrated covers with gray cloth spine and gilt Japanese lettering, beveled edges, preface in Japanese and English (2 pages), Japanese language table of contents (3 pages) and 109 unpaginated full page plates. Many of the plates contain two images. The first plate is a collotype plate printed in brown. The collotype plate has no captions protected by a tissue guard. It is placed after the preface and before the table of contents. The collotype plate was mounted for easy extraction with perforations at the binding edge to make extraction easy and clean. If a perforated stub is found in the book, that means this plate has been removed. The 108 plates that follow are all black and white halftones and printed front and back on the page. All halftone plates have descriptive information in Japanese in the margin and a brief English descriptive caption. The book is in a vertical format and reads Japanese style (from right to left and back to front). An excellent view of Tokyo in the early 1900s by the renowned photographer, publisher and printer, Kasumasa Ogawa.
