Ponting, Herbert G.:
Fuji San Photographed by Herbert G. Ponting, Tokyo, published by K. Ogawa, distributed by Kelly Walsh Ltd. (Yokohama, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Shingapore), Japan, copyright 1905 by H.G. Ponting, large 4to (9 7/8~10 x 14 3/4 in - 25~25.4 x 37.5 cm), decorated card covers, silk stab ties, 2 pages of text (one in English and one in Japanese), 25 full page black and white halftone plates including the final plate which folds out, glossy paper, spine uncovered except for approximately 1 inch at the top and bottom, 27 pp. An album of 25 images of Mount Fuji viewed from different locations and seasons. Each photograph page is printed on one side only and is captioned in English and Japanese. The images in this book were based on half-stereoviews produced from Ponting's photographs.

I have confirmed a first and second printing of this book.

  • 1st Printing. Colophon states a printing a publication date of 1905 (Meiji 38). The kimono on figure on the front cover is printed in dull black. Only the last plate is protected by a tissue guard. Slightly larger measuring (10 x 14 3/4 in - 25.4 x 37.5 cm)
  • Reprint. The colophon indications a reprinting date of 1906 (Meiji 39). The kimono on figure on the front cover is printed in blue. The first and last plates are protected by a tissue guard. Slightly smaller measuring (9 7/8 x 14 3/4 in - 25 x 37.5 cm).
The first and second printing contain identical plates.

A similar companion book was published in 1906 titled Japanese Studies. It contained H.G. Ponting's photographs of Japan which were rendered in collotype by K. Ogawa. For more information on that book, click here.
