The title on the spine reads "The United States and Japan." This is "Extra Volume VIII" of Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science. The other volumes in the series are listed in the 4 pages of ads at the end of the book. The focus of the book is the foreign commerce between Japan and the United States. It deals extensively with the Perry Expedition and it's influence on US/Japan commerce. The book contains a section on Americans in Japan to include the "Dark Side of Foreign Influences" as well as a section on Japanese in America which includes the "Japanese in California."
