Hand Colored Albumen Photographs (x50)
Small Size Format, Lacquer Album

A Yokohama tourist trade photograph album which probably dates to the late 1890s. Lacquer over wood boards on the front and back containing 50 hand colored albumen photographs. The covers measure 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 in (14.2 x 18.5 cm) while the individual photographs measure approximately 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 (9 x 13.6 cm). The front cover has a hand painted scene of a man pulling a jinrikisha carrying a woman with an umbrella. The faces of both the man and the woman are a white ivory (or ivory appearing) inlay. The back cover has a very subdued flower and leaf pattern. The albumen photographs are tipped to thick card stock. Some have captions in the negative. The album is configured in accordion style. The first series/set of 25 photographs opens out in a continuous sheet from front to back. The second set/set of 25 photographs opens out from back to front (on the obverse of the mat with the first set.

The focus of the first series of photographs is women and groups. The focus of the second series of photographs is scenic spots. The album carries no information as to the source/photographer or studio.

Condition. The boards have light scratching, rubs, nicks and damage along the edge. They remain solid and have a satisfactory overall appearance. There are no repairs to the accordion folds. The photographs are in Very Good condition with some foxing, fading and minor blemishes or faults.
