Medal Commemorating the
Perry Expedition to Japan

Characteristics Found in Original Medal and Restrikes

.

Original Silver Medal

  1. Dot (raised point) on the upper right curve of the "R."
  2. Ridge (vertical) on the left portion of the third "O."
  3. Ridge (diagonal) on the upper left portion of the "D."
  4. Ridge (vertical) on the left portion of the second "O."

I have only found the above characteristics on original medals and the early restrikes. They are not seen on the modern restrikes.

Unique Engraving Characteristics on Commodore Perry's Hair.

1. Original Silver (Top), 2. Early Restrike (Middle) & 3. Modern Restrike (Bottom)

On the original and early restrikes, a small lock of hear at the top of the head has a diagonal line which breaks the flow of the hair. Because it crosses the hair lines it is quite noticeable. There is no such feature on the 20th century restrike and the hair flows smoothly.
