Ikoku Ochiba-kago (Fallen Leaves from a Foreign Country), Tokyo, Bigakudo, 1854, 4 1/2 x 7 in - 11.5 x 17.5 cm, brown wrapps, 20 double folded leaves, 17 color wood block illustrations, 2 double page maps. A very rare contemporary view of the Perry Expedition. This book is recorded in the 1966-9 Dawson Book Shop Catalogues, Catalogue 354, Lot 154 ("Rare Perry Book"). The Dawson description follows.

154. GLEANINGS OF PERRY'S VISIT. Ikoku ochiba-kago. A mint copy of the rarest and finest of the printed books devoted to Perry in Japan, 1853-1854. This unusual little book, 4 1/2 by 7 inches, carefully block-printed in full colors, is a contemporary record of Perry in Japan. Its illustrations include the following scenes: Edo Bay, showing all defense installations; text noting the latter in full; list of presents exchanged between Japan and the U.S.; color prints of: U.S. steam locomotive presented to the Japanese; plants, cannon, parrot, etc.; color map of North America; portraits of: Commodore Perry, Perry's son, Commander Adams, "NCO Howsle "; depictions of American Marines and their officers, military caps, drums, swords, band instruments, sloop, uniforms, view of U.S. steam-frigate - ending with the Japanese text of Perry's message to the Japanese emperor. The finest of all printed Perry-ana, in perfect condition. Edo, 1854. In cloth case.
