Hall's Voyages, 1840 Edition

Hall, Basil
Ellis, Henry
Pringle, Thomas:
Voyages and Travels, London, Edward Moxon (Bradbury and Evans, Printers, Whitefriars), 1840, 8vo (6 3/4 x 9 3/4 in - 18 x 24.8 cm), cloth covers with gilt lettering on the spin and blind-stamped decoration on front and back boards, printed in double columns, 2 maps. This book is a consolidation of four important travel and exploration books of the 19th century.

Narrative of a Voyage to Loo-choo, Basil Hall
Extracts from a Journal Written on the Coasts of Chili, Peru, and Mexico (2 Parts), Basil Hall
Journal of the Late Embassy to China, Henry Ellis
Narrative of a Residence in South Africa, Thomas Pringle

The individual books are the "public" (less expensive) versions of the original books and lack the plates found in the more expensive versions. You often see the books in this format called "paper back" versions. All title pages carry the date of 1840 (MDCCCXL). The first book is preceded by a consolidated title page and then map showing the track of Hall's vessels. Each book starts a full title page. Each books is paginated separately. A total of 482+ numbered pages. Since the only publication date shown is 1840, I believe this consolidated volume was published in that year. There are only two illustrations, a map of showing the route of the ships and a map of Loo-choo. The map of Loo-Choo shows "Sugar Loaf" at the north east of the island. This is not the same "Sugar Loaf" hill made infamous during the WWII battle of Okinawa.
