of complete lithograph

The letter from the President of the United States to the Emperor of Japan was received by Prince Toda of Izu (Idzu) and Prince Ido of Iwami who were the dual governors of Uraga and representatives of Tokugawa Shogun rather than directly appointed representative of Emperor Komei.

The titles/lettering read:

  • E. Brown, dag.

  • T. Sinclair's Lith, Phila.

  • PRINCE OF IDZU

Several lightly discolored areas in the image area.

I have noted two picture types on this lithograph. I call this one Type I. Type I has a bluish/gray tint not seen on the Type II. The right hand lettering has Philadelphia abbreviated as "Phila." (with the "a"). The three round objects on the Prince's top garment do not have black designs within them.
