Street in Hakodadi

Commodore Perry arrived in Hakodadi on May 17, 1854 and remainded there until June 3. He was there to negotiate the terms that would apply to US ships in that port. This is one of several lithographs from that visit showing scenes and people of Hakodadi.
Notice that while there are many people in the street scene, none appear to be women. In his diary of the Expedition, George Preble noted that:
Strange to say we have not seen a woman in Hakodadi. The soldiers who attend all our rambles send one of their party ahead to shut the houses, and drive the women in doors.
