The Narrative examined all aspects of Lew Chewan culture. It noted that the chief occupation was agriculture and there was limited commerce with Japan and China. The manufactured products noted were course sugar, salt, Sakee, cotton, grass cloth textiles, "...an inferior style of lacquered ware," pottery, hair pins and other miscellaneous articles needed for day to day life. The Okinawan's told Perry that they did not have a currency of there own. He did not believe that but never was successful in getting Lew Chewan currency.

Two differences are noted in the pictures on this lithograph. I call this Type II. The branch that extends toward the arch of the roof of the building in the center of the picture reaches the arch of the building. The wall behind the lady sitting at the far right in the picture has clearly defined mortar lines. For pictures of the types recorded, click here.
