Temple at Tumai Lew Chew (Type IIA)

of complete lithograph

This lithograph depicts the Temple at Tumai. An armed expedition member is in the forground while a nearby Okinawan slaps his monkey. The expedition photographer, Eliphalet M. Brown, Jr., is shown with his camera (dageurreotype) taking a picture of the temple. This plate is often referred to as the "Photographer's" plate. It is the only plate in the Narrative which depicts a photographer. I believe that Tumai is Tomari which is where the cemetery for foreigners was located. A very diverse and interesting lithograph.

I have recorded several types of pictures on this lithograph. I call this Type IIA. For information on the three types, click here
