of complete lithograph

On June 6, 1853 at 10AM, Commodore Perry set out from his ships in Naha harbor to visit Shuri castle. He ensured a show of military force by including in his party two companies of Marines, two artillery pieces and a military band. There were as many as forty officers in the party also. This must have been an impressive show of force to his Okinawan "hosts" who were not at all enthusiastic about the visit to the castle.

In this lithograph the American party pauses at the Shurei-mon (Gate of Courtesy), which is the second gate of Shuri Castle, amid much military pomp and pageantry.

It is believed that the original Shurei-mon was built in the 1520s. The gate was approximately 18 feet in height and supported by four posts, each a foot in diameter. The gate was completely destroyed in World War II. It was reconstructed in 1957-8. On the day it was dedicated this stamp was issued commemorating the event.
